Merrit Kennedy. Craigslist said Friday that it is taking the site’s personals section offline. AP hide caption. You can still find furniture or a roommate on Craigslist. But ads seeking romance or sexual connections are no longer going to be available, after Craigslist took down the “personals” section Friday for its U. The company says it made the change because Congress has passed the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act, meant to crack down on sex trafficking of children. It was approved by a landslide in the Senate earlier this week, as NPR’s Alina Selyukh has reported , but has been met with criticism by free speech advocates and sex workers. As Craigslist wrote, the law seeks “to subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties users misuse online personals unlawfully. Hopefully we can bring them back some day. The site added: “To the millions of spouses, partners and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness!

But have you ever wondered where those ocean waters come from, and what influence they may have? Australia is surrounded by ocean currents that have a strong controlling influence on things such as climate, ecosystems, fish migrations, the transport of ocean debris and on water quality. We did a study, published in April , that helps to give us a better understanding of those ocean currents.
Surface currents around the Australian continent. Our 15 year simulation indicates that water from the Pacific Ocean enters the Indonesian Archipelago through the Mindanao current north and Halmahera Sea south. It then enters the Indian ocean as the Indonesian Throughflow between many Indonesian Islands, with flow through the Timor Passage being the most dominant.
Most of this water flows west as the South Equatorial Current.

A book like this is long overdue. With this work, Williams and Wu have made an important contribution to the fields of Chinese legal and literary studies. It synthesizes an already significant corpus of writings on Chinese prisons and labor camps, marshals an array of literary sources as essential historical source materials, and compares the literature of Chinese incarceration with its Soviet and European counterparts. The value of this important study stems equally from its tone–a rare combination of a level-headed quality with a very fine sensitivity to the humantragedy recounted in this literature.
The angle is new; the question is to find out how Chinese have written on this subject, whether in fiction or reportage, the way they went about telling their stories, how much they said, or withheld. Through Philip Willams and Yenna Wu’s thought-provoking analysis of such writings, of the cultural origins of forced labor and imprisonment in imperial and Communist China, one comes closer to this sinister reality, which remains to this day one of the best kept secrets of our planet.

They were in the kind of high spirits unique to teenagers on summer vacation with nothing much to do and nowhere in particular to go. It was the police. An officer with the local department told her to come down to the station immediately. She had no idea what the cops might want with her. Stern had graduated from high school the month before, in Big Lake, Minnesota, a former resort town turned exurb, forty miles northwest of the Twin Cities.
And whilst this book is not a new release and has thus been the subject of review before, I guess it is with the same emulous and egotistical attitude — a profound characteristic inherent to both boxers and writers — that I now walk mine into the ring. From the outset, it is important to mention that this book is not one singular narrative.
It is instead comprised of twenty-one distinct, snapshot vignettes, with each chapter given its own beguiling titular enticement, underneath of which lies an eponymous subheading that conveniently provides the reader with the name of the subject soon-to-be under scrutiny and explication. Chapter centrepieces include Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson and Jake LaMotta; Joe Frazier, Johnny Tapia, Mike Tyson and Roberto Duran, but when thinking as to which audience this book would best readily apply to, I am reluctant — and consider it perhaps reductive still — to simply pigeon hole it in for readership by an older audience, or to suggest that it would mainly be of interest to those with real-time, colour memories of occasions spent watching these fighters in action.
Boxing fans tend to coalesce into identifiable and stratified layers, like sediment carried wholly in fluvial motion, yet comprised of particles which either integrate or separate due to their relative densities, their corresponding Rouse numbers. And this book satisfies the often-diverging requirements of all three! One would think that given the caravan of mainstream reporters, photographers and the retinue of assistants and advisers that Tyson preoccupied during his heyday; the innumerable column inches, interviews, documentaries and features, combined with the publication of a ratified, detailed autobiography, that there could be no possible perspective or minutiae about his person yet inexhausted.
I agree that stylistically, as a complete body of work, the writing is taut and sinewy, but there is still more than enough floridity in the prose to excite the sensibilities of the aspirant litterateur; floridity which is buttressed, further still, by the promiscuous interspersions of lofty literary and philosophical references, such as the transcendent links between pugilism, Dadaism, Surrealism and JG Ballard.
Given the accessible, oversimplified publications from many in this sporting subculture, one would be forgiven for thinking that these two enjoyments were in fact mutually exclusive. Mercifully, Acevedo dispels this notion for us here, eliding and presenting the two into one captivating page read. In every industry, in every epoch, there are those who argue that greater goods, such as personal comfort or tribal solidarity should take precedence over the demands of justice.
It is supposed to be the axiom of civilised media that no individual or truth should be sacrificed for hypothetical benefits, such as the fostering of relationships or quid pro quo. But, in actuality, in boxing media especially, cosy sycophancy and purchasable lip service is often the dominant, overriding ethic.

Anatol Lieven’s book is a magisterial investigation of this highly complex and often poorly understood country. Engagingly written, combining history and profound analysis with reportage from Lieven’s extensive travels as a journalist and academic, Pakistan: A Hard Country is both utterly compelling and deeply revealing. Washington Times , July 7, Foreign Policy ‘s AfPak Channel, October 13, “Despite Pakistan’s heterogeneity, one aspect of the country that demonstrates some homogeneity is the universal nature of the “clan-based” system of allegiance that is ingrained in most Pakistanis.
This system has been recognized for some time, and was articulated recently, and most clearly, by the scholar Anatol Lieven in his book, Pakistan: A Hard Country. The book is well researched, informative, insightful, but most of all for a country that finds itself often in headline news for the wrong reasons, empathetic. Description In the past decade Pakistan has become a country of immense importance to its region, the United States, and the world.
With almost million people, a ,man army, nuclear weapons, and a large diaspora in Britain and North America, Pakistan is central to the hopes of jihadis and the fears of their enemies. Yet the greatest short-term threat to Pakistan is not Islamist insurgency as such, but the actions of the United States, and the greatest longterm threat is ecological change. Product Details Price.

The hashtag doingthings has been used about a hundred and twenty-five thousand times on Instagram. Most of the posts are connected to the clothing brand Outdoor Voices, which was founded by a graduate of the Parsons School of Design named Tyler Haney, in , when she was twenty-five years old. The clothes photograph beautifully—somehow, they make the wearer look as if she were put on earth to be viewed on Instagram, posing against a forest vista in flamingo-colored spandex and a smile.
Outdoor Voices is frequently described as an athleisure brand, although Haney, who was a serious athlete in her teens, hates the term, associating it with clothes that were made for watching TV while occasionally thinking about the gym. Athleisure, in any case, means different things for different people. I tend to think of it as activewear that costs more than seems entirely sensible, or as a spandex-clad arm of the long-standing ideology that urges women to improve the market value of their physical form.
According to one research firm, the activewear market is now a fifty-five-billion-dollar industry, and accounts for nearly a quarter of all U. Outdoor Voices is only a fraction of that market, but it has raised nearly sixty million dollars from investors and has had triple-digit growth every year since its founding. Rather than advertising world-class athletes engaged in rigorous training or fierce competition, OV emphasizes low-key workouts and everyday movement.
Almost none of these women are paid by OV, but many of them use Instagram professionally, as life-style or fashion bloggers, or paraprofessionally, as millennials with phones whose well-being is loosely connected to their popularity online. A life-style blogger in Connecticut, whose uncompensated doingthings post I had come across, lamented how much time she and her peers devoted to Instagram.
But, until then, you have to do it. OV also pays a small number of professional influencers to post Outdoor Voices photos on their Instagram accounts. A spokesperson declined to specify how many.

Peter Yang for Wired. There is something special happening in a generic office park in an uninspiring suburb near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Inside, amid the low gray cubicles, clustered desks, and empty swivel chairs, an impossible 8-inch robot drone from an alien planet hovers chest-high in front of a row of potted plants.
It is steampunk-cute, minutely detailed. I can walk around it and examine it from any angle. I can squat to look at its ornate underside. Bending closer, I bring my face to within inches of it to inspect its tiny pipes and protruding armatures. I reach out and move it around. I step back across the room to view it from afar. All the while it hums and slowly rotates above a desk. It looks as real as the lamps and computer monitors around it. It is a virtual object, but there is no evidence of pixels or digital artifacts in its three-dimensional fullness.
If I reposition my head just so, I can get the virtual drone to line up in front of a bright office lamp and perceive that it is faintly transparent, but that hint does not impede the strong sense of it being present. This, of course, is one of the great promises of artificial reality—either you get teleported to magical places or magical things get teleported to you.
